Unearth: The march

03/12/08  ||  Euthanatos

I think Winthrop is a brilliant name for a town. That’s where Unearth comes from, incidentally. As most probably know, Unearth play a generic type of metalcore, nothing too mediocre, nothing too spectacular. While their third album got them more hype and exposure, could the fourth one, “The March”, finally bring them to the top level of American bands? Not really. Unearth continue to be generic as fuck. Everything is played to perfection and the vocals are exactly like everyone else’s in America right now. Yes, there are some good moments, but even taking a shit has good moments, so why would you buy this album? Exactly, you shouldn’t, because you’ve heard it a thousand times before.

The qualities Unearth became famous for, the aggressiveness, the crystalline and heavy production, the balls-out approach to song-writing, it’s all still there. But I think if the band went on to a thrashier direction, like they kind of made us think they would in “The Oncoming Storm”, perhaps better things would have come to fruition. Instead, we get 11 decent songs that don’t really have any hooks or memorable moments. I cannot, for the life of me, think why someone would put all of Unearth’s discography on their audio software playlist and listen to hours on end. It’s just the same thing, over and over again.

I don’t think we’re that far off from the cycle finally closing in on metalcore. Like the Swedish melodic death metal wave, the scene quickly became bloated with followers and copies of copies, making the consumer sick to their stomach of so much of the same. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The cover: Someone is trying to butt-rape that poor guy! Help!

6 unearthed riffs out of 10.
